Think and Grow Rich written by Napoleon Hill is one of the success books I love. It created a great impact in my life since I've read the book and apply its principles. My lifestyle, habits, perspective, and way of thinking changed dramatically because of the influence of this book. I learned how to think differently and I noticed that, as I practice the principles in the book, my way of life starts to escalate. The first and the most important principle mentioned in the book is "Desire". Every person who does not have desire will probably not his waste time reading the book. I also discovered that when I read Think and Grow Rich everyday, and in turn applied what I had read every day of my life, I experienced more success. When I didn't do those things every day, I experienced less success. I had read portions of the book and tried out a few of the suggestions that the author mentioned in the text. As a form of gratitude, I will share what I learned reading Think and Grow Rich based on my understanding, observation through application, and experience.

The first thing I did was to create my "Statement of Desire." For me, creating and writing my statement of your desire is very vital to my success. I wrote my statement of desire in a 1/4 sheet of paper and read it twice a day - day and night. As I continue to do this habit, I create more focus to my goals and feels lots of confidence in myself that produce me positive results. Here is a structure of my statement of desire. I intended to leave the other portion blank because it's my way of protecting my dreams. "I only share my dreams to people who trust me, not to people I trust".

By the first day of January (my time limit to achieve my goal), I will have in my possession (the exact amount of money I desire), which will come to me in various amounts from time to time during the interim. In return for this money, I will give the most efficient service of which I am capable, rendering the fullest possible quantity and the best possible quality of service in the capacity of (describing the service or merchandise I intend to sell). I believe that I will have this money in my possession. My faith is so strong that I can now see this money before my eyes. I can touch it with my hands. It is now awaiting transfer to me at the time and in the proportion that I deliver the service I intend to render in return for it. I am awaiting a plan by which to accumulate this money, and I will follow that plan when it is received.

As I declare these words, I am applying the principle of auto-suggestion for the purpose of giving orders to my subconscious mind. I always put emotions as I declare these words because I know that it's worthless unless I put emotions on it. I am aware that the subconscious mind will act only upon instructions which are emotionalized, and I am also aware, that "Faith," is the strongest and most productive of the emotions.

You can also write your own "Statement of Desire". It may seem impractical and abstract. But just follow the instructions, no matter how abstract or impractical they may, at first, appear to be. Continue to always declare your desire and act upon it, and time will soon come when a whole new universe of power will unfold to you.

DESIRE
The reason I read and finished reading the book was because I already had a burning desire to reach my goal, and I was seeking the right principle to achieve my goal until I found the book Think and Grow Rich. As I stated earlier, desire is the most important principle of all. In my opinion, without desire, the rest of the principles are can't be appropriately applied. Truly, "thoughts are things." It is very powerful that, when mixed with a definite purpose and burning desire, will transmute itself into riches or other material objects. Always remember that wishing and desiring is very different to each other. Wishing will not bring riches, but desiring will.

A desire accompanied with a definite plan and persistence will surely transmute itself into a material object. A desire should be burning. Because often times, opportunity comes in a different form, and from a different direction than one expects. Opportunity often disguised in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat. This is why so many fail to recognize opportunity. The majority of men meet with failure because of their lack of persistence in creating new plans to take the place of those which fail. A desire must not just a desire, but a burning desire if you want to win in any undertaking. We have the power to control our thoughts.

To succeed, you must have a definite desire. Success comes to those who become success conscious, while failure comes to those who indifferently allow themselves to become failure conscious. You must learn to change your mind from failure consciousness to success consciousness.

A word of caution though, as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "Be careful of what you want, for you shall get it."

FAITH
"I always feed my desire with positive emotions". Faith is one of the most powerful and productive emotions. As stated in the book, "Faith" is the head chemist of the mind. When faith is blended with the vibration of thought, the subconscious mind instantly picks up the vibration, translates it into its spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to Infinite Intelligence, as in the case of prayer.

All thoughts which have given feeling and mixed with faith begin immediately to translate themselves into their physical equivalent or counterpart. As stated, "The emotion is not immediately subject to reason, but is immediately subject to action." Reasoning can be likened to a car's steering wheel, as an emotion can be likened to fuel, which enables the car to run. When the two of these are used appropriately, will produce positive result.

You can create or induce faith through auto-suggestion or repeated affirmation. It really works, my faith began to grow as I repeatedly instruct my thoughts to believe and focus on my goals. Then my faith created me self-confidence, it eliminates my doubts and fears.

Now I'm convinced that faith is not a form of religion. But a state of mind which can achieve by any human being whatsoever religion he have. The man who wins, is the man who thinks he can!

AUTO-SUGGESTION
Auto-suggestion is a term which applies to all suggestions and all self-administered stimuli which reach one's mind through five senses. Auto suggestion is self-suggestion. Whether you suggest positive or negative suggestions, your subconscious mind will act through the dominating thoughts which one permits to remain in the conscious mind.

The subconscious mind takes any orders, although the orders often have to be presented over and over again, through repetition. The reason why I read my "Statement of Desire" every day and night - in a spirit of faith, is because I am applying the principle of auto-suggestion. Here is my own interpretation of auto-suggestion, conscious mind, and subconscious mind: Auto-suggestion acts like a farmer, he will decide which seed (it's either positive or negative seed) will he sow in the ground. The ground is the conscious mind, it will accept whatever seed the farmer puts into it. The subconscious mind is the forces of nature, it will produce the fruit of the seed (the conscious mind).

Remember that we always apply the principle of auto-suggestion, whether it's positive or not, whether we are aware or not.

I think, auto-suggestion is a form of habit. Habit grows out of the environment, out of doing the same thing or thinking the same thoughts or repeating the same words over and over again. When habit has been well formed, through repetition of thought or action, the mind has a tendency to attach itself to and follow the course of that habit.

Habit is created by repeatedly directing one or more of the five senses of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling in a given direction.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE
According to the author, there are two kinds of knowledge: One is general, and the other is specialized. General knowledge, no matter how great in quantity or variety it may be, is of but little use in the accumulation of money. Specialized knowledge is a knowledge that is organized, and intelligently directed, through practical plans of action to the definite end of accumulation of money.

I believe in what Napoleon believed, that knowledge is not power. But just a potential power. Knowledge becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of actions and directed to a definite end.

I also noticed as the author had noticed it, that men sometimes go through life suffering from inferiority complexes because they are not men of "education." The man who can organize and direct a Master Mind group of men who possess knowledge useful in the accumulation of money is just as much a man of education as any man in the group. I always remembered this when I suffered from a feeling of inferiority. It's a whole new perspective to me. I can now assure that what the author said was true, because I know there are people who were lack of school education but created a great fortune such as:

1) Thomas Edison - Founder of General Electric
2) Henry Ford - Founder of Ford Motor Company
3) Walt Disney - Founder of Disneyland
4) Bill Gates - Founder of Microsoft
5) Steve Jobs - Founder of Apple
6) Mark Zuckerberg - Founder of Facebook

These men didn't finished school, but they became Titans. I'm not saying that, not going to school is a ticket to success; because I also have examples of Titans who finished school such as Donald Trump - Founder of The Trump Organization and Robert Kiyosaki - Founder of The Rich Dad Company. What I'm saying here is that, no obstacles can keep a man in achieving his goals if he have a "Definite Aim and A Burning Desire" whether he finished school or not. These men had mastered the "Master Mind Principle."

IMAGINATION
The imagination is literally the workshop wherein are fashioned all plans created by man. The impulse, the desire, is given shape, form, and action through the aid of the imaginative faculty of the mind. It has been said that man can create anything which he can imagine.

There is a saying in most of our schools that states, "Education is a treasure that cannot be stolen." The reason I believe this statement to be true, is because in my opinion, even a theft is not interested in your education. I always believe in the power of "imagination" more than education.

A sound imagination or idea, when being materialized, do not die - even the brain who created the idea died. For example, the imagination of Mr. Walt Disney still exists nowadays and still being improved by this new generation. Mr. Ray Kroc's system of McDonalds is immortal, even Mr. Kroc passed away, McDonalds' system is still operating. That's the power of a sound imagination! The thefts could still ideas (someones imagination), that's why ideas needs to get a patent.

According to Napoleon, the imaginative faculty functions in two forms: One is known as "synthetic imagination" and the other is "creative imagination."

Synthetic Imagination: Through this faculty, one may arrange old concepts, ideas, or plans into new combinations. This faculty creates nothing. It merely works with the material of experience, education, and observation with which it is fed.  It is the faculty used most by the inventor, with the exception of the "genius" who draws upon the creative imagination when he cannot solve his problem through synthetic imagination.

Creative Imagination: Through the faculty of creative imagination, the finite mind of man has direct through which "hunches" and "inspirations" are received. It is by this faculty that all basic or new ideas are handed over to the man. It is through this faculty that thought vibrations from the minds of others are received. It is through this faculty that one individual may "tune in," or communicate with, the subconscious minds of other men.

ORGANIZED PLANNING
You must ally yourself with a group of as many people as you may need for the creation and carrying out of your plans. But before forming your Master Mind Alliance, decide first what advantages and benefits you may offer the individual members of your group in return for their cooperation. It's an intelligent advice, because no one will work indefinitely without some form of compensation - though, the money may not be always involved as a form of compensation.

Then, arrange to meet with the members of your Master Mind group for at least twice a week, and more if possible. Maintain perfect harmony between yourself and every member of your Master Mind group.

If you're going to select the members of your Master Mind group, endeavor to select those who do not take defeat seriously.

Perhaps your first plan does not work successfully, replace it with a new plan; if this new plan fails to work, replace it in turn and so on until you find a plan which does work. Again, you should have burning desire and persistence when organizing your plans. Remember that Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times before he became successful in creating the electric bulb. "It's not how many times you fail that matters, it's how many times you pick yourself up!"

DECISION
Most failures were caused by a lack of decision. Procrastination, the opposite of decision, is a common enemy which practically every man must conquer.

Keep your eyes and ears wide open - and your mouth closed - if you wish to acquire the habit of prompt decision. Those who talk too much do little else. If you talk more than you listen, you not only deprive yourself of many opportunities to accumulate useful knowledge, but you also disclose your plans and purposes to people who will take great delight in defeating you, because they envy you.

Applying these principles not only saved me from troubles, but also put me to the opportunities I need to achieve my definite aim in life.

PERSISTENCE
Persistence is an essential factor in the procedure of transmuting desire into its monetary equivalent. The basis of persistence is the power of will. Willpower and desire, when properly combined, make an irresistible pair. Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold-blooded and, sometimes, ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is willpower, which they mix with persistence and place back of their desires to ensure the attainment of their objectives. Lack of persistence is one of the major causes of failure.

The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat. If you find yourself lacking in persistence, this weakness may be remedied by building a stronger fire under your desires.

This statement is so true! I failed many times and tend to be lacking of persistence. But a mission (a desire) gives me another strength which I do not know where came from at first, until I realized that this new strength and persistence was the result of my stronger fire under my desire.

POWER OF THE MASTER MIND
The "Master Mind" may be defined as: "Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose." No individual has great power without availing of the Master Mind.

Henry Ford whipped poverty, illiteracy, and ignorance by allying himself with great minds whose vibrations of thought he absorbed into his own mind.

Through his association with Edison, Burbank, Burroughs, and Firestone, Mr. Ford added to his own brain power the sum and substance of the intelligence, experience, knowledge, and spiritual forces of these four men. Moreover, he appropriated and made use of the Master Mind principle through the methods of procedure described in the book.

This principle is available to you!

THE MYSTERY OF SEX TRANSMUTATION
The meaning of the word transmute is, in simple language, "the changing, or transferring of one element, or form of energy, into another." Sex transmutation is simple and easily explained. It means the switching of mind from thoughts of physical expression to thoughts of some other nature. Sex desire is the most powerful human desires. When driven by this desire, men develop keenness of imagination, courage, willpower, persistence, and creative ability unknown to them at other times.

Scientific research has disclosed these significant facts:

  1. The men of greatest achievement are men with highly developed sex natures - men who have learned the art of sex transmutation.
  2. The men who have accumulated great fortunes and achieved outstanding recognition in literature, art, industry, architecture, and other professions, were motivated by the influence of a woman.

The research from which these astounding discoveries were made went back through the pages of biography and history for more than two thousand years. Wherever there was evidence available in connection with the lives of men and women of great achievement, it indicated most convincingly that they possessed highly developed sex natures.

A better definition of genius is "a man who has discovered how to increase the vibrations of thoughts to the point where he can freely communicate with sources of knowledge not available through the ordinary rate of vibration of thought."

Intemperance in sex habits is just as detrimental as intemperance in habits of drinking and eating. Man is the only creature on earth which violates Nature's purpose in this connection. Every other animal indulges its sex nature in moderation and with a purpose which harmonizes with the laws of Nature. Every other animal responds to the call of sex only in "season." Man's inclination is to declare "open season."

Every intelligent person knows that stimulation in excess through alcoholic drink and narcotics is a form of intemperance which destroys the vital organs of the body, including the brain. Not every person knows, however, that overindulgence in sex expression may become a habit of destructive and as detrimental to creative effort as narcotics or liquor.

THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND/THE BRAIN
The subconscious mind consists of a field of consciousness in which every impulse of thought that reaches the objective mind through any of the five senses is classified and recorded, and from which thoughts may be recalled or withdrawn, as the letters may be taken from a filing cabinet. It receives, and files, sense impressions or thoughts, regardless of their nature. You may voluntarily plant in your subconscious mind any plan, thought, or purpose which you desire to translate into its physical or monetary equivalent.

It is your responsibility to make sure that positive emotions constitute the dominating influence of your mind. Here, the law of habit will come to your aid. Form the habit of applying and using the positive emotions. Eventually, they will dominate your subconscious mind so completely that the negatives cannot enter it.

THE SIXTH SENSE AND HOW TO ELIMINATE FEARS
The thirteenth principle is known as the sixth sense, through which Infinite Intelligence may, and will, communicate voluntarily without any effort from, or demands of the individual. The sixth sense is that portion of the subconscious mind which has been referred to as the Creative Imagination. It has also been referred as the "receiving set" through which ideas, plans, and thoughts flash into the mind. The "flashes" are sometimes called "hunches" or "inspirations."

Here are the six fears which are the cause of all discouragement, timidity, procrastination, indifference, indecision, a lack of ambition, self-reliance, initiative, self-control, and enthusiasm:

  1. The Fear of Poverty
  2. The Fear of Criticism
  3. The Fear of Ill Health
  4. The Fear of Loss of Love of Someone
  5. The Fear of Old Age
  6. The Fear of Death

We can master these fears if we know its name, its habits, and its place of abode. If you demand riches, determine what form and how much will be required to satisfy you. You know the road that leads to riches. You have been given a road map which, if followed, will keep you on that road. If you neglect to make the start, or stop before you arrive, no one will be to blame but you. This responsibility is yours. No alibi will save you from accepting the responsibility if you now fail or refuse to demand riches of "Life," because the acceptance calls for but one thing - incidentally, the only thing you can control - and that is a state of mind. A state of mind is something that one assumes. It cannot be purchased; it must be created.
